We spend a good deal of time trimming, filing, buffing, and removing cuticles from our nails. We add gorgeous nail polish colors to cover them up, and do so to match our moods and our styles. While beautiful nails are a sign of good health and a devotion to taking care of ourselves, the very same things we use to beautify ourselves with might be deteriorating our nail strength. We are all experts on our own bodies, and what better way to keep them feeling great than to notice if and when something is different.
Our nails can actually tell us a good deal about the general health of out entire body. Here a are 3 things to observe in regards to your nail health, and take immediate note of if they appear:
1. If your nails appear to be a bit too pale make sure that you are not suffering from an iron deficiency. A simple prick of the finger at your doctor’s office can test for your iron count. Getting plenty of greens into your diet and avoiding processed foods will be of great help.
2. Stripes that occur on the nails that run cross the entire nail may be indicative of Muehrcke’s lines. These distinctive nail marking could indicate a lack of proteins or underlying diseases. If the lines are horizontal and short, they are most likely just indicative of hitting or scraping the nail, and will disappear on their own.
3. Thickening or yellowing nails are often found in people who are fond of having acrylic nails placed on top of their own nails. Because moisture and bacteria can easily become trapped between the nail and the acrylic on top, once the acrylic nail is removed, the original nail may be found to be yellowing or thickening. This is an indication of a fungal infection that will most likely require the use of antibiotic to clear it up. Topical ointments alone will not clear it.
One of the most important needs that must be met for all of our bodily tissues is a constant and fresh supply of oxygen, and our nails are no different. If, like many of us, you love a good manicure and the awesome styles and colors applied in either nail polish or acrylic to the nails, you have to learn to give your nails time to literally “breathe” between manicures. Giving your nails a week without polish, and/or acrylic nails on top will give the nails a chance to regenerate themselves.
Homemade Beauty Treatment for Nails
Your nails are doing great, and are in excellent condition. How can you pamper them and maintain their natural beauty at home with natural ingredients. Here are three of my favorite nail treatments that you can use whenever you have some time to devote to yourself, with ingredients you will readily find around the house:
1. Pour a warm bowl of water and add a few drops of lemon juice to it (half a lemon or drops from a concentrate bottle). Soak the nails for about 5 minutes to give them a clean glowing look, and bring their natural luster back.
2. If your nails seem to feel a bit more brittle than usual, just crush bit of garlic, and apply it to the top of the nails. Allow it to sit for about 5-7 min and then rinse off with warm water. Garlic will strengthen the nails greatly.
3. Our nails and hair are made of protein. Just as we use conditioner to soften our locks, we can easily condition our hair as well. One of the easiest nail treatments to make at home is comprised of honey, eggs and olive oil. Take two tablespoons of honey with two tablespoons of olive oil and mix them together in a saucepan until they are thoroughly blended. Whisk an egg and then gradually add the honey and olive oil into the egg. Whisk them together and then apply generously to fingernails. Leave on for 10-15 min and then rise off completely.
